Orioles acquire Jim Thome

The Orioles have acquired veteran slugger Jim Thome from the Phillies in exchange for Single-A prospects Kyle Simon and Gabriel Lino. Dan Duquette, GM of the Orioles, told reporters that the two teams have been talking to each other about Thome for over a week.

Thome is hitting .242 with 5 home runs in 71 plate appearances this season. He recently went 6-for-13 against Baltimore earlier this month.

Simon was Baltimore's fourth round pick in the 2011 draft. He pitched to a 3.96 ERA in 14 starts in Single-A this year. Baseball America ranked him as the Orioles' 18th best prospect before the season started. They predict that he will be "an innings-eating starter" once he reaches the major leagues.

Lino is hitting .218 in 227 plate appearances in low Class-A ball this year. He was ranked as the Orioles' 21st best prospect. They note that he offers nice power potential but is very raw behind the plate.

Analysis: This is a great trade for both sides. The Orioles have been juggling around with their designated hitters this year. Nick Johnson is currently on the disabled list and the DH spot is a weakness for Baltimore. Thome is a great addition. The Phillies now have two young players who could potentially turn into something special. Overall, this is an even trade and it helps both sides.
