The Diamondbacks have designated first baseman Lyle Overbay for assignment. The move creates space for the newly-acquired third baseman Chris Johnson.Overbay has hit .292 in 110 plate appearances this year. Manager Kirk Gibson really limited Overbay's exposure to left handed hitting (15 plate appearances) in order to preserve his value. Overbay signed a one year, $1 million contract with Arizona last off-season.
