The Padres have designated pitcher Alex Hinshaw for assignment. The move creates space for pitcher Tom Layne, who has been recalled from Double-A.Hinshaw posted a 4.50 ERA in 28 innings of relief for San Diego this season. He struggled with his control, posting a 6.4 BB/9 ratio.
