Yankees designate Laird for assignment

The Yankees have designated infielder Brandon Laird for assignment to create space for fellow infielder Steve Pearce, who was just acquired by New York this afternoon.

Laird played 11 games for the Yankees last year, and has spent the entire 2012 season in New York's Triple-A affiliate. In Triple-A he has hit .254 with 15 homers and 31 doubles in 550 plate appearances.

Analysis: Laird will definitely get claimed. He has pretty-high upside and is still very young. I'm surprised that the Yankees are designating him for assignment but I guess he's expendable.
