The Diamondbacks have announced that outfielder Cole Gillespie has cleared waivers and will elect free agency over being outrighted to Triple-A. Arizona designated Gillespie for assignment a couple of days ago to create roster space for Mike Jacobs.Gillespie had a few brief cups of coffee with Arizona in 2010-2011, but has spent the entire 2012 season in Triple-A, where he has hit .308 with 13 homers in 510 plate appearances. The Diamondbacks originally acquired Gillespie in the Felipe Lopez trade of 2009.
Analysis: Gillespie has put up nice stats in Triple-A, but is really a quadruple-A player in my opinion. I'm not surprised that he didn't get claimed, but I'm sure that he'll sign some sort of minor league deal with SOMEBODY this winter. A trip to Japan is also possible.
