Yankees designate Thomas for assignment

The Yankees have designated pitcher Justin Thomas for assignment to create roster space for relief pitcher David Aardsma, who was been activated from the 60-day disabled list.

The Red Sox designated Thomas for assignment in May, and the Yankees claimed him off of waivers. He posted a 3.45 ERA in 30 games in Triple-A this season. He also appeared in four MLB games in 2012, allowing three runs in three innings of work.

David Aardsma hasn't pitched in the MLB since 2010 due to hip surgery that he underwent during the 2010-11 off-season. He also underwent Tommy John surgery last July.

Analysis: Thomas will probably clear waivers. He really isn't anything special, despite being a lefty, which could appeal to some teams. At this point of the season, it is very unlikely that anyone would get claimed off of waivers, so look for Thomas to be outrighted to Triple-A soon.
