Indians pick up option for Jimenez, decline options for Hafner, Hernandez

The Indians have announced that they have picked up the 2013 club option for pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez, and declined the 2013 options for designated hitter Travis Hafner, and pitcher Roberto Hernandez. Jimenez will earn $5.75 million in 2013. Hafner will earn a $2.75 million buyout instead of the $13 million salary. Hernandez's option was worth $6 million, and he can still be retained through arbitration.

Jimenez had a rough 2012 campaign, posting a 5.40 ERA in 31 starts and 176 2/3 innings. Since arriving in Cleveland last summer, he has certainly failed to live up to the expectations of being an ace.

Hafner battled several injuries in 2012, and hit just .228 in 263 plate appearances in 2012. He has been with the Indians since 2003, but has struggled to stay healthy for the majority of his tenure.

Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, spent most of the season trying to gain access back into the United States. He was suspended for several weeks following a false identification scandal, and posted a 7.53 ERA in three starts on the year.

Analysis: Picking up Jimenez's option makes sense, despite his struggles, because of his age and track record. The guy was great a few years ago with the Rockies but hasn't been able to put it together with Cleveland. At $5.75 million, I feel like it is worth the risk. Hafner's option was an easy one to decline, because he is way past his prime. The guy just cannot stay on the field, and it is time for Cleveland to move on from him. I wouldn't be surprised if Hernandez is non-tendered, because he is way to inconsistent to belong on that staff.
