Chicago White Sox: Preparing for the future

The White Sox currently have 12 wins and 14 losses in the 2012 season and many of their players are struggling to produce. General manger Kenny Williams has many bad contracts to deal with and those bad contracts will prevent the team making any big free agent signings over the next couple of years. Alex Rios' was claimed off waivers by the Sox in 2009 and signed a huge deal with the team. He is owed $37 million over the next 3 years. Although he's gotten off to a decent start this season, he will have to perform a lot better if he wants to impress White Sox fans and make it seem like hes worth $13 million a year. Pitcher John Danks is owed $58 million over the next 5 seasons and hes gotten off to a horrific start, posting a 6.51 ERA in 6 games started. Pitcher Gavin Floyd has gotten off to a good start but he is owed $7 million this year and has an option for next year that is worth $9 million. Pitcher Jake Peavy has been performing like an ace this season but he is owed a whopping $39 million over the next 2 seasons and his track record has shown that he cannot stay healthy for an entire season. Adam Dunn had a TERRIBLE year last year. He hit .159 in 415 at bats. He is owed $44 million over the next 3 years and the White Sox front office is extremely angry about his performance since joining the windy city. All of these bad contracts will prevent the team from making any big moves to contend for the next few years and it appears that the Sox will either have to eat the contracts, wait until they expire and move on or trade them at the deadline while they are hot, which appears to be the most logical choice. The White Sox do in fact have some young talent such as Chris Sale, Addison Reed, Tyler Flowers, Dayan Vicedo and Alejandro De Aza.

What the White Sox should do to prepare for the future- They should trade Peavy, Dunn (possibly), and Rios at the deadline. The Sox shouldn't even ask for prospects, they should just hope that the opposing team takes that player and most of his contract. The Sox could ask for prospects but they would have to add more money to the trade. After they trade those three players, they should play Vicedo everyday. The guy has good power and has the potential to hit 35-30 home runs if he played everyday. They also have to make a decision on Chris Sale. He played for the team last year playing in a relief role as a setup man. This year he started the season in the Starting Rotation and was doing very well. The team decided to remove him from the rotation in fear that he'll throw too many innings and hurt his arm. He is currently the closer of the team. Overall, the team should reevaluate itself after the GM Williams trades away Peavy, Rios and Dunn. It appears like he wants to rebuild because he traded slugger Carlos Quentin and relief pitcher Sergio Santos in the off season. Once they get rid of those bad contracts, they'll have to work with what they've got and rebuild through the farm system. The future doesn't look that great for the White Sox.

What will be Chris Sale's role with the White Sox in the foreseeable future?

What the White Sox shouldn't do to prepare for the future- Williams doesn't trade Peavy, Rios, and Dunn and get rid of they're ridiculous contracts. He keeps Chris Sale as the closer. Sale has a great arm and it would be wasted if he remains they're closer for the future. Williams keeps Vicedo on the bench or includes him in a package for a number 2 or number 3 starter. Williams remains active in free agency and spends more money on big name free agents.
