Trade Candidate: Justin Morneau

Lets face it, the Twins are not going to be a competitive team this year. They have some good hitters but they're pitching is very weak and that will keep them out of the race. The injury bug generally likes to attack the Twins as well. The next player on my trade candidate list is Twins first baseman Justin Morneau. Morneau has dealt with concussion issues for parts of the last two seasons and he has been a cornerstone player for the Twins for about 9 years. Just like Kevin Youkilis (previous player in this series), Morneau has been hampered with injury issues all season long and is not producing when he is healthy. He currently has 8 home runs with a .248 BA in 28 games. I would imagine that the Twins would want to trade him because they have young first baseman Chris Parmelee waiting until Morneau in the depth chart.

Morneau's value is low but could the Twins try and deal him at the deadline?

Teams like the Yankees or even the Pirates could seriously be interested in Morneau. The Yankees need a DH badly even though Raul Ibanez is having a nice year. The Pirates, if they are in contention by the trade deadline, will need a first baseman. Last year they traded for Derrek Lee and that didn't work out. Luckily for the team that acquires him, Morneau has one more year left on his contract after this season and I would imagine that the Twins would want to pay for most of his salary in order to get a good prospect back.
