The Mets are definitely interested in trading for the Rockies' catcher Ramon Hernandez, but New York isn't willing to offer significant prospects to complete a trade. The Mets are willing to take most of Hernandez's $3.2 annual salary for 2012 and 2013 once he comes off the disabled list.Mike Puma reports today, "We are not talking about acquiring Gary Carter in 1985 here," one Mets official told Puma.
The Rockies are really interested in Mets minor leagues Matt Den Dekker, Josh Edgin, Wilfredo Tovar, Jacob deGrom, and Domingo Tapia. The Rockies have offered to put pitcher Matt Reynolds in the trade to receive an extra prospect or two, but the Mets aren't interested.
Analysis: As a Mets fan, I don't want GM Sandy Alderson giving up any prospects for a 36 year old catcher who is hitting .215. I'm not even thrilled about the idea of the Mets taking on his annual salary, because they are tight on money as it is. I think they should go after Kelly Shoppach or Miguel Olivo because Colorado's asking price for Hernandez is too high.
