The Reds have acquired relief pitcher Jonathan Broxton from the Royals in exchange for minor league pitchers Donnie Joseph and J.C. Sulbaran.Broxton has had an excellent bounce back year, posting a 2.27 ERA in 35 2/3 innings. He has posted a career best 56.6% ground ball rate, which is mainly why he has only allowed one home run this entire season. Broxton will be a free agent after this season and has $1.4 million remaining on his contract.
Broxton will most likely be joining Sean Marshall in the setup man role. Aroldis Chapman is most likely going to keep his closer job.
Joseph has a 1.72 ERA with 11.7 K/9 in 52 1/3 relief innings at the Double-A and Triple-A levels this year.
Sulbaran has a 4.04 ERA in 19 games started at the Double-A level this year.
Analysis: Wow. The Reds' bullpen is going to be insane now. I imagine that if Madson didn't get hurt earlier in the year, Cincinatti probably wouldn't have acquired Broxton and they might have even used Chapman in the starting pitcher role. Joseph seems like a really good prospect, and Sulbaran seems like a decent prospect with high upside. I like this deal for both sides, but especially the Royals, who have been looking for young pitchers.
