The Yankees have acquired corner infielder Casey McGehee from the Pirates in exchange for relief pitcher Chad Qualls.The Yankees have been seeking third base help ever since Alex Rodriguez broke his hand about a week ago and was announced that he was going to miss 6-8 weeks. The Yankees could also use McGehee at first base, consider Mark Teixeira has been dealing with some injuries lately as well.
McGehee has hit .230 in 293 plate appearances with Pittsburgh this year. They acquired him from Milwaukee last off-season. He has about $890K remaining on his contract, and will be arbitration eligible after this season. He was made expendable by Pittsburgh once they acquired Gaby Sanchez earlier today.
Qualls has a 4.89 ERA for the Phillies and Yankees this year. The Yankees acquired Qualls on July 1st after Philadelphia designated him for assignment.
Analysis: I really like this deal for the Yankees. McGehee is a decent option at third base while A-Rod is recovering from his injury. Qualls is an awful relief pitcher, and I don't know what Pittsburgh saw in him. Perhaps now that Brad Lincoln is in Toronto, Qualls could be used as the Pirates' setup man.
