Small moves: Hurley, Russell, Hughes, Broderick

• Pitcher Eric Hurley has elected free agency, according to MLB.com. The Angels called him up earlier this month but he didn't appear in any games. He signed a minor league deal with the Angels last winter and posted a 5.81 ERA in 18 Triple-A starts this season. 
• The Braves have released pitcher Adam Russell. Atlanta signed Russell to a minor league deal last winter. He posted a 7.28 ERA in 38 1/3 innings pitched at Triple-A this season. 
• The Athletics have released infielder Luke Hughes. Oakland designated him for assignment in April, but he cleared waivers. Hughes spent the bulk of this year in Triple-A, where he hit .223 in 152 plate appearances.
• The Cardinals have released pitcher Brian Broderick. Broderick, 25, posted a 7.32 ERA in 78 2/3 innings this year in Triple-A.
