Chavez has posted an 8.44 ERA with 11.4 K/9 in 21 1/3 innings with Toronto this year. He was designated for assignment earlier in the year but cleared waivers. He has spent most of the season in Triple-A as a starter, posting a 3.98 ERA in 95 innings. Earlier in the season, the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks of the Japanese league made an offer to the Blue Jays to acquire Chavez, but Toronto declined.
Analysis: Well, Chavez isn't a great pitcher by any means but he'll serve as rotation depth. I'm sure Billy Beane has been looking for depth over the last few days following Bartolo Colon's 50 game suspension.
