The Padres have released infielder Jason Bartlett, the team announced via press release today.San Diego originally acquired Bartlett two years ago in a trade with the Rays.Two-off-seasons ago, the team avoided arbitration with Bartlett and agreed to a two-year contract worth $11 million with a vesting option for 2013. Now that he has been released, he will earn a $1.5 million buyout of his vesting option.
Bartlett has struggled this season, hitting .133 in 98 plate appearances. He has been on the disabled list since May 17, and once the Padres traded Ernesto Frieri for Alexi Amarista, a lot of people figured that Bartlett no longer factored in the team's future plans.
Analysis: We all saw this move coming. The Padres have began a minor youth movement and allowing Alexi Amarista to play everyday is the right move. As for Bartlett, he has struggled so much for San Diego but I'm sure he'll sign with another team this year. Like I said earlier today, Oakland is looking for infield depth and they could take a long look at Bartlett.
