The Indians have officially hired Terry Francona to be their manager in 2013. Francona will be calling the shots in Cleveland for the next four years, and there will be a formal introduction Monday morning at a press conference.Francona has been linked to the Indians for the last week or so ever since Cleveland fired Manny Acta. Many were curious if the Indians were willing to offer him a satisfactory deal, but he ended up getting one. Francona does indeed have close relations with GM Chris Antonetti and team president Mark Shapiro.
The Indians finished the 2012 season with a record of 68-94, which was good for 4th in the AL Central. Francona has a career 1,029-915 managerial record across 12 big league seasons as a manager.
Analysis: This is a very solid signing by the Indians. Francona is a great manager and will hopefully turn their franchise around. However, I hope he knows what he is getting himself in to. The Indians are not close to competing and, unless they make any key acquisitions this winter, they will probably have another losing season in 2013. They need better players, but getting an above-average manager certainly cannot hurt.
