The Rangers have declined the 2013 options on pitchers Scott Feldman and Yoshinori Tateyama. In a corresponding move, Texas reinstated Neftali Feliz off of the 60 day disabled list and purchased the contract of Justin Miller from Triple-A.Feldman will earn a $600k buyout instead of a $9.25 annual salary for 2013. He was been a swing-man for the Rangers last season, posting a 5.09 ERA in 123 2/3 innings.
Tateyama's option was worth $1.2 million, and the amount of his buyout is unknown. He posted a 9.00 ERA in 14 appearances for Texas. He spent most of the season in Triple-A, posting a 1.13 ERA in 32 appearances.
Analysis: Feldman is a spot starter at best, so it is obviously smart to not give him $9.25 million. I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers try to re-sign him at a lower price, because he is still a good pitcher to have in your bullpen. Tateyama did not pitch well with the Rangers, and will probably just go back to Japan. Just another failed Japanese import in the books.
