The Rays have announced that they have exercised the 2013 club option for pitcher James Shields. The right hander will earn $10.25 million in 2013.Shields had a very strong 2012 season, posting a 3.52 ERA inn 227 2/3 innings pitched while striking out 223 batters. He was surrounded by several trade rumors leading up to this year's trade deadline, but the Rays ultimately chose to hold onto him.
Analysis: This is a no-brainer, even if the Rays decide to trade him. He had a very good 2012 season and coming in the year I wasn't sure if he was going to duplicate his 2011 success. I truly believe that he will be traded, considering that Tampa Bay has a surplus of pitching a needs quite a bit of help offensively, specially at catcher and center field (assuming B.J. Upton leaves.)
