The Tigers have announced that they have exercised Jhonny Peralta's 2013 club option worth $6 million, and Octavio Dotel's 2013 club option worth $3.5 million.Peralta hit .239 in 585 plate appearances with Detroit during the 2012 season, and would have earned a $500k buyout if Detroit chose to decline his option.
Dotel signed a deal with the Tigers last off-season, and had some success in 2012, serving as the team's setup man for the most part. He posted a 3.57 ERA in 58 innings pitched. His buyout was worth $500k.
Analysis: The Peralta option was a curious one, because he did ALRIGHT with Detroit in 2012 and his position could have certainly been upgraded. I truly believe that the Tigers could be in the Elvis Andrus sweepstakes, and Peralta could still be traded. Dotel, on the other hand, was solid for most of the year and $3.5 million is probably a good price tag for him. He is getting older, so signing him to a longer deal wouldn't make sense, but it is smart to keep him around considering that Jose Valverde is probably a goner.
