Leyland led the Tigers to the World Series in 2012, only to get swept in four games by the Giants. Next season will be his 22nd as a big league manager, and 8th with the Tigers. The Tigers have put up a combined 607-528 record while Leyland is at the helm.
Analysis: Obviously this is the right move because Leyland is one of the better managers in the game, even though he does not show much emotion. His players look up to him and he gives them respect, and that is very important. It is sort of odd that he is getting a one year extension rather than a multiyear deal with more job security. Perhaps the ownership feels that he is on his way out and will take it one year at a time with him.
