Orlando Hudson to sign with the White Sox

Hudson can back up Gordon Beckham at second base

Free agent Orlando Hudson has claimed that he is set to sign with the White Sox, according to Peter Gammons of MLB.com. Hudson was released by the Padres Thursday afternoon. Hudson was hitting just .211 for the Padres in 35 games this year. He will earn $5.5 million this year (money will be paid by the Padres) and he will earn a $2 million buyout (from the Padres) for next season.

Analysis: This is not a bad signing for Chicago. Hudson brings middle infield depth and a veterans presence. His fielding may have diminished a little, but I expect that he will be solid in the field and will play moderately well for Chicago. Chicago has nothing to lose because they are only paying him the league minimum while San Diego is paying for his salary. He shouldn't be a bust for Chicago, and if he continues to play poorly, they could always put him in Triple-A or release him.
