The Astros and Blue Jays have completed a ten player trade this morning. The Astros will obtain seven players from Toronto: Francisco Cordero, Ben Francisco, Joe Musgrove, Asher Wojciechowski, David Rollins, Carlos Perez and a player to be named later. Toronto will acquire pitcher J.A. Happ, Brandon Lyon (pictured), and David Carpenter in the trade."Once again we are adding depth to our minor league system with quality young players," Astros GM Jeff Luhnow said in a press conference earlier today. "We really feel this will help us moving forward and are extremely excited about the players we've added to our organization."
Cordero and Francisco are pending free agents, so they will most likely not remain will the club past this season. Cordero has a 5.77 ERA in 34 1/3 innings pitched this year. He signed a one year, $4.5 million deal with Toronto last winter. Francisco will earn $1.54 million this year and will be arbitration eligible again after this season. He has hit .240 this year with the Jays and has battled a hamstring injury, so he could possibly be non-tendered this fall.
The Blue Jays selected Wojciechowski in the supplementary first round of the 2010 draft. He has a 4.05 ERA in parts of three minor league seasons. He ranked tenth on Baseball Americas off-season list of Toronto's best prospects. Musgrove was a supplementary first round pick by the Jays in the 2011 draft. He has a 3.31 ERA in 32 2/3 innings pitched over the course of two minor league seasons.
Rollins, 22, has a 2.46 ERA with 8.3 K/9 in two minor league seasons. The Blue Jays selected him in the 24th round of the 2011 draft. Perez, has hit .275 with Toronto's Single-A affiliate this year, and he has a career .777 OPS in parts of five minor league seasons.
Lyon is on track to hit free agency after this season. He had a 3.25 ERA in 36 innings for Houston this year. Lyon played for Toronto in 2001 and 2002. This season he will earn $5.5 million.
Happ has been traded at the trade deadline before, being shipped to Houston from Philadelphia in the Roy Oswalt trade back in 2010. Happ has a 4.83 ERA in 104 1/3 innings pitched this year so far, and will earn $2.35 million this year. He is under team control through 2014.
Carpenter has a 6.07 ERA in 29 2/3 innings pitched this season. He has a solid minor league record, posting a 2.97 ERA in five minor league seasons.
Analysis: Yes, I know there are a lot of players in this deal and I felt like this was a very balanced deal. The Blue Jays got what they want, getting starting pitcher depth with J.A. Happ. Brandon Lyon and David Carpenter will also be nice additions to that bullpen. Even though I think this is a very balanced trade, I think the Astros GM Jeff Luhnow did a fantastic job here. Lets put it this way, he pretty much got rid of a load of crap (besides Carpenter), for a bunch of prospects will a load of potential. These players are going to be part of the Astros future, and I can't imagine that their fans would be upset about this deal.
