The Athletics have released pitcher Brian Fuentes. Oakland designated the 36 year old lefty for assignment on July 3.Fuentes has a 6.84 ERA in 25 innings of work this year. He is in the second year of a two-year, $10.5 million contract he signed with Oakland prior to the 2011 season. The Athletics have to pay him $5 million this year, and he can now sign with any team for the league minimum ($500k.)
The Cardinals recently showed interest in acquiring Fuentes.
