The Dodgers and Cubs are discussing a possible trade that would send either Matt Garza or Ryan Dempster to Los Angeles. The Dodgers seem to be the favorites to acquire Dempster, and they have also had conversations about Garza.The Dodgers have some payroll flexibility under the new ownership now. They could be open to taking parts of Garza ($9.5 million) or Dempster's ($14 million) salary, but it seems that Cubs GM Theo Epstein is interested in getting good prospects back in a trade even if it means that he has to eat up some of the contract.
Dempster recently returned from the disabled list, and pitched five scoreless innings against the Mets on Sunday. He has a league leading 1.99 ERA in 86 innings pitched this season. He will be a free agent in the off-season.
Garza has a 4.32 ERA in 92 2/3 innings pitched this year. He is eligible for arbitration again this winter and then will be a free agent following the 2013 season.
