After 2011, the Red Sox felt like they had a surplus of outfield depth and they wanted to address their bullpen. They acquired Andrew Bailey from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for a package of players centered around outfielder Josh Reddick. Boston got what they wanted, but they soon found out that Bailey had a serious thumb injury and would be forced to miss the majority of the season. Oakland definitely got what they wanted, and that is a corner stone player in the outfield.
Reddick was drafted in the 17th round of the 2006 draft by the Red Sox. He came right out of the gate putting up great numbers at the Single-A and Double-A levels. He went to Triple-A in 2009 and his batting average took a serious hit. He still managed to maintain 18+ home runs a year, but it looked like he wasn't going to be a player who was able to get on base that often. He had a few cups of coffee with Boston in 2009 and 2010 and struggled while he was up. In 2011 he managed to get some more playing time due to several injuries. He hit .280 with 7 home runs in 278 plate appearances that year. In the 2011 off season, Boston felt that his value was high and he was expendable. Like I said earlier, they traded him to Oakland and I'm sure they now wish they never made this trade.
Reddick has been great with Oakland this year, hitting .268 with 20 home runs in 357 plate appearances. He looks like he will be with the Athletics for a long time, and Billy Beane's big trade has paid off. I wouldn't be surprised if he turns into a 20-20 player in his career, because he definitely is capable of swiping a few bases.
Reddick got snubbed from the All-Star game, and that's because he is playing for Oakland. He hasn't opened many eyes because he is on a small market team. Right now he currently has 20 home runs at the All-Star break, and I think he will probably end the year with over 35 bombs. I truly believe that he will end the year with a batting average of like .270.
Reddick still has to persuade fantasy owners to get him, considering he has no track record whatsoever. He may turn into a hitter who is capable of hitting over 30 home runs, but might keep a low batting average that would scare some owners. Sounds a little like Mark Reynolds right? Anyway, Oakland has a star outfielder in the making and they better hope he can continue the success he is having.
