Fantasy talk: Welcome to the Show: Anthony Gose

With outfielder Jose Bautista on the 15 day disabled list due to wrist inflammation, the Blue Jays called up top prospect Anthony Gose to fill in temporarily. Gose will get a lot of playing time but will probably be sent back down when Bautista returns. Gose has gotten a few at bats lately, and in our latest Fantasy Baseball Welcome to the Show, we will check in on our expectations for Gose in order to learn more about him and to determine whether he will be worth picking in next years fantasy draft.

Gose was drafted in the 2nd round (51st overall) in the 2008 draft by the Phillies. He didn't stay in the Phillies organization for that long, getting shipped to Houston in the Roy Oswalt deal. The Astros immediately traded him to Toronto in exchange for first baseman Brett Wallace. Gose put up decent numbers in the minor leagues, but his speed really stood out. In 2011, he had 70 stolen bases while hitting .253 in plate appearances. Before the 2012 season, Baseball America ranked Gose as the MLB's #39th best prospect.

Gose started this season in Triple-A, and put up great numbers. Before his call up to the big leagues, he hit .292 with 29 stolen bases in 92 games. He made his big league debut on July 17 against the Yankees, and eventually collected his first hit against Clay Rapada in the 9th inning. He made his first big league start the following day, going 0-3 with two strikeouts. Like I mentioned before, I don't think Gose will stay up in the big leagues for that long. When Bautista comes back up, Toronto will have to send someone else down. I think Toronto feels like Gose should just get the taste of the big leagues before he gets the everyday gig next season.

As far this season, I don't think Gose is going to be a great fantasy player due to his lack of playing time. His stolen bases in the minor leagues are impressive, and are certainly something for us fantasy owners to check in on. Looking into next season, I can see Gose being a player capable of hitting around .270 with 50+ stolen bases and maybe 15+ home runs. I'm just a little concerned about his batting average.
