The Pirates have acquired Wandy Rodriguez from the Astros in exchange for minor leaguers Rudy Owens, Robbie Grossman, and Colton Cain. The Astros will also pay some of the remaining $30 million salary on Rodriguez's contract. Rodriguez is now under team control through the 2014 season, his 2014 option was triggered by this trade.Rodriguez has posted a 4.04 ERA in a little over 1,300 career innings pitched with the Astros. He signed a three-year, $34 million extension with Houston prior to the 2011 season.
Grossman, an outfielder, is the best of the three prospects that Houston has received. He is a switch hitting, sixth round draft choice by Pittsburgh in 2008. He has hit .262 with 7 home runs in 413 plate appearances in Double-A this year.
Owens has a 3.14 ERA in 19 starts with Triple-A this year. He has been added to Houston's 40 man roster.
Analysis: I like this deal for both clubs. The Astros have completely replenished their farm system by having a full out fire sale this summer. The Bucs have shown that they are in it to win it this year and have given their fans hope. I hope Wandy has success in Pittsburgh, because he really deserves to win a championship.
