The Nationals have designated pitcher Atahualpa Severino for assignment to create roster space for newly-acquired infielder Cesar Izturis.
Severino appeared in six games for last year's Nationals team, but has spent the entire 2012 campaign in Triple-A. He has a 2.72 ERA in 40 relief appearances at the Triple-A level this year.
