The Mariners have designated outfielder Johermyn Chavez for assignment to create roster space for several players. Mike Carp, Luis Jimenez, Shawn Kelley, Alex Liddi, Hector Noesi, Carlos Triunfel and Casper Wells have all been placed on the big league roster.Chavez has spent most the season in Double-A, where he has hit .232 in 288 plate appearances. Chavez originally came over to Seattle in the Morrow-League swap a few years ago.
Analysis: Odd move here. Chavez is actually a pretty good prospect. The guy hit 30+ homers in the minors a few years ago, and has some upside. He is also 23 years old, so if he can hit, you'd have to figure that he's in their future plans. Look for a club to snatch him up.
