The Phillies have declined the 2013 club options for infielder Ty Wigginton and pitcher Jose Contreras. Both players will earn $500k buyouts and hit free agency.Contreras spent most of the 2012 season on the disabled list. He was lost for the season with a torn elbow ligament, and his option was worth $2.5 million.
Wigginton appeared in 125 games for Philadelphia on the season, hitting .235 with 11 home runs in 360 plate appearances. His contract included a $4 million option for 2013.
Analysis: Keeping Contreras around would make no sense at all because the guy is way past his prime and you don't know how he'll bounce back from the surgery. He was a decent setup man in his day, but is definitely not worth $2.5 million. Wigginton is extremely versatile, and has some pop to his bat, so I expect him to gather some interest.
