The Yankees have exercised the 2013 club options for pitcher David Aardsma, and second baseman Robinson Cano.Cano will earn $15 million next season. He hit .313 with 33 home runs in 2012, and will become a free agent at the end of the 2013 season. His agent is Scott Boras and will apparently be seeking "top of the market dollars" next off-season.
Aardsma signed a one year deal with New York last off-season knowing that he would miss most, if not all of the 2012 season, since he was coming off of Tommy John surgery. He will earn $500k in 2013, and more will be available with incentives.
Analysis: Well this doesn't surprise me at all. I believe that Cano will eventually sign an extension with New York, and he is going to ask for crazy money. A ten year contract could actually be in the works, and that deal would easily be over $200 million. Keeping him around for another year despite his poor post-season performance makes sense. Aardsma was a pretty good reliever with Seattle a few years ago, and the Yankees see him as a reclamation project. He will only earn $500k, so keeping him around is worth the risk.
